The Intercultural Soccer tournament for the for the Rice Cup took place in Mount Sion GAA Grounds in Waterford on the 29th of March 2009. This tournament was part of the Edmund Rice Awards. 2 students Lee Nugent and Ben Duggan undertook this project . This Tournament was about bringing together different nationalities through Sport. Through the Edmund Rice Awards students come to realise that Edmund Rice’s life included a Spirit-inspiried move to change the very structures of his society. To be included for an Edmund Rice Award students must engage in social justice activity within their local community and spend time reflecting on this activity.
This Tournament brought together 5 CBS Schools in the South East. 2 teams from Mount Sion and one each from New Ross, Waterpark and Dungarvan.
Each team had to have at least 3 Foreign nationals. Mount Sion A captained by Lee Nugent and Ben Duggan came out the winners.
The runners up were CBS Dungarvan. The final was decided on a Penalty shoot out which was won by Mount Sion A.
Each school had to bring a poster on Racism. A special congratulation to the Waterpark Secondary for the beautiful poster they presented. The tournament really brought out the changing face of our schools in Waterford and Ireland.
The Rice Cup was presented by Mr John McArdle the Principal of Mount Sion Secondary School. Thanks go out to Mr John McAcardle, and the Office Staff of Mount Sion Secondary School.
We also want to say special thanks to Mr Pat Kelly Waterford School Boys Soccer, Gary Power, Development Officer FAI Waterford, Br Kevin Mascarenhas, Director Information and Support Unit for New Communities in Waterford and Ms Anne Reilly Edmund Rice Awards Dublin for helping organise the tournament and support Lee and Ben in this great undertaking.
