The Information and Support Unit for New Communities hosted a Family Fun Day which was well attended by the Local Community and members of the New Communities (over 150 adults and children). The event took place in the Mount Sion School Hall in Barrack Street on Wednesday 9th of July 2008. This cultural event had its primary focus on children but also giving families living in direct provision centres the opportunity to come out and socialise with the local community through play, sports, music and dance.
All of the children enjoyed their activities while their parents watched them and chatted with other parents. Some grandparents from the Inner City came along with their grand children to take part in the Family Fun Day and they expressed their appreciation to the ISU for hosting such a Community Event that has a focus on families particularly children.
There was plenty of indoor and outdoor activities for the children to enjoy and participate in, such as Face painting, Hair braiding, Puppet show, Disco dance and some simple Sporting activities like Soccer, Ball throwing, Hula hooping. In the first hour, the children were engaged in games and other activities and there was a huge buzz in the hall when the puppet show began, there was great excitement. The puppet show was followed by disco dance; in fact all the children and even adults were treated to an hour of fun, laughter and dance. Like most good parties everyone received a goodie bag to take home.
Parents who were present were very positive about the event and they would like it to happen again before the children return to school. The children were happy to be reunited with some of their friends from school and they loved the puppet show.
The Information and Support Unit for New Communities would like to especially thank all the volunteers on the day with particular mention for Beverley, Dorothy, Kekindhe, Agnes, Attracta, Lucy Whittle from Waterford One World Centre, John Kennedy from the HSE and Anne Hayes from Waterford Immigration Network and the caretaking staff of Mount Sion Primary School who facilitated the use of the hall.
